All-Online Ph.D. in Christian Studies
A new opportunity to gain the highest-possible degree in the most convenient possible format
For more than a century, Southern Seminary has been a leader in innovation when it comes to doctoral studies. Here in Louisville, in 1892, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary launched the first seminary doctoral degree in North America. That degree became the Ph.D., and it has grown into one of the most respected seminary doctorates in higher education. Ph.D. graduates from Southern Seminary hold more teaching positions at institutions affiliated with the Association of Theological Schools than almost any other evangelical institution.
Until now, that degree has only been offered on the campus of Southern Seminary.
But now, you can earn that same Ph.D. wherever you are.
The new Ph.D. in Christian Studies at Southern Seminary is a synchronous online degree—that means you will spend each seminar experiencing live interactions with the same professors who teach on campus. Then, you’ll be mentored through comprehensive examinations and a dissertation by one of these same faculty. And all of this can happen without requiring a single trips to campus. The Ph.D. in Christian Studies allows you to earn the entire Ph.D. without ever leaving your place of ministry.
If this opportunity sounds like something that interests you, take a look at the new Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Studies at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. It’s the same rigorous academics as always but in a more flexible format to meet your needs.

I’m curious to see how this will pan out in the long run. By far the most beneficial aspect of my doctoral work has been the time developing relationships face to face. Those, I hope, will far outlive any degree earned.
I’m sure those relationships can be fostered, to a degree, in a purely online context but they will take significant and purposeful intentionality.
I hope it goes well.
